Flat Iron, the London steak group known for its single-cut concept and accessible price point, has confirmed a Spinningfields site in Manchester as its next opening — the first Flat Iron restaurant outside London since the group was founded in 2012.

The Manchester site will occupy a ground-floor unit in the Spinningfields estate and will seat approximately 130 covers, making it the largest Flat Iron restaurant in operation. The group currently operates eight London sites including Soho, Covent Garden, London Bridge and Shoreditch, and has been publicly considering regional expansion for several years.

"Manchester was the clear choice," said the group's managing director. "The city has an appetite for the kind of no-nonsense, quality-first offer that Flat Iron has always been. The brief was always to bring the same experience — the same steak, the same service, the same price — outside London without adapting it for a different market. Manchester doesn't need it adapted."

The Flat Iron Model

Flat Iron's proposition is built on a deliberate constraint: a single cut of beef — the flat iron, a shoulder cut that delivers flavour and texture comparable to considerably more expensive alternatives — served at a price point that has remained significantly below the premium steak market. The current London menu centres on a flat iron steak at around £17, served with a salted caramel soft-serve dessert included in the price.

The simplicity of the offer is its commercial strength. A kitchen built around a single primary protein and a focused supporting menu achieves a throughput and consistency that more complex operations cannot match. Flat Iron sites regularly turn tables multiple times per service and sustain high covers per labour hour — a unit economics model that has funded the group's gradual London expansion without external capital.

Manchester's Steak Landscape

Manchester has a well-developed steak restaurant market, with operators including Hawksmoor, Gaucho, Menagerie and a number of independent steakhouses competing for a consumer base that has proven consistently willing to spend on quality beef. Flat Iron's price point — significantly below Hawksmoor and Gaucho, comparable to or below the better independent operators — positions it as an accessible entry to the category rather than a luxury proposition.

The Spinningfields location puts Flat Iron at the centre of Manchester's corporate dining geography, adjacent to the financial services and legal sector that drives consistent midweek lunch and evening demand. Weekend volume will come from the broader Manchester city centre catchment that Spinningfields benefits from given its position at the western edge of the retail and leisure core.

An opening date and reservation details are expected to be confirmed by the group in the summer.
