The Ned, the luxury hotel and members' club brand that opened its landmark London site in the former Midland Bank headquarters in 2017, has confirmed a September 2026 opening for its Liverpool property — a £85 million conversion of the former Bank of England building on Castle Street in the city's historic commercial district.
The Liverpool site will be the brand's second UK property and its first outside London, following the success of its Soho location, which has become one of the capital's most commercially successful hospitality venues since opening. A New York site opened in 2022, followed by Doha in 2023 and Rome in 2024 — and the brand's expansion into Liverpool reflects growing investor confidence in the UK's regional luxury hospitality market.
The building, a Grade II* listed neoclassical structure dating from 1848, has been sympathetically converted by architects Yabu Pushelberg — who also designed the London original — to incorporate 120 hotel bedrooms, nine restaurants and bars, a spa, a gym and pool, and members' facilities across six floors. The building's original banking hall, with its 40-foot coffered ceiling and marble columns, will become the centrepiece of the hotel's dining and social space.
Nine restaurants and bars
The Ned Liverpool's food and beverage programme will follow the multi-concept format established at the London site, with nine distinct dining venues occupying different parts of the building. Confirmed concepts include a British brasserie, a cocktail bar in the former vaults, a rooftop bar and terrace overlooking the Mersey, and a members-only dining room on the upper floors.
The culinary programme will be led by group food director Mark Jankel, with each of the nine venues overseen by a dedicated head chef. Recruitment for all kitchen and front-of-house leadership positions is currently underway, with a preference for Liverpool-based talent where possible.
"Liverpool has an extraordinary food and hospitality culture," the brand's UK general manager said in a statement. "We want The Ned Liverpool to feel genuinely of this city, not just in it. The building has incredible bones — we're giving it a new life that serves the city."
Economic impact
The Ned Liverpool is expected to create approximately 320 permanent jobs on opening, rising to around 400 by the end of its first year of trading. The project has received backing from Liverpool City Region's Mayoral Development Corporation as a cornerstone investment in the regeneration of the Castle Street and Water Street corridor.
The hotel element will be open to non-members as well as The Ned's existing global membership base, which now stands at over 40,000 across its international portfolio.
Pre-opening membership applications open on 1 May.
